Belinda Foo

Belinda loves to write music and wishes she could write more original music and get paid decently for her work (or indecently for that matter). She’s written music for musicals, the SSO and scored, orchestrated music for the Singapore and Hongkong Arts Festivals.

“I love writing for the orchestra!”

“I remember listening to the SSO playing a piece that I wrote for the very first time: it was thoroughly moving; like giving birth. Believe me, I know what that means: been there, done that, been there, done that, been there, done that. (Three kids) So, if you’re out there reading this and you’ve got a writing gig that involves the orchestra, call me already!”

This year, she is working on a series of nine Tone Poems scored to nine of Rilke’s love poems to God. It is written for a 40 piece orchestra, percussion ensemble and chorus. “Widening Circles”, the name of this project, is an integrated performance which will involve not only musical elements, but the literary as well with live recitation of Rilke’s poems woven into the piece.

Besides writing, Belinda teaches, drives her kids around and up the bend and ‘tri’s: she started this swim, bike, run thing when she turned 40 and doesn’t know when to call it a day. Be careful when she comes up to you and asks, “Can you swim? Do you bike? Can you run?”
